Okay, so I’ll be the first one to admit — when I first heard about the Dollar Shave Club (DSC) a year or so ago I thought it was an idiotic idea. I mean, how lazy do you have to be to need razors delivered to your house each month? Couldn’t you just grab, for less, at the store yourself? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about convenience, but more than that I’m truly frugal.
Flash forward to Christmas and I’m offered to try the DSC for free. Well free is this frugalista’s love language, so I figured why not. I opted for the top of the line, the Executive. I mean, it’s free so why not opt for the $9 razor. (Scroll to the bottom for your chance to try it for just $1 AND free shipping).
As a long-time addict of the Schick Intuition Plus, I had no idea what to expect quality wise, but I figured it’d have to be semi-decent.
To my pleasant surprise it was beyond decent quality — it was amazing.
Which is why I’m writing all of this. In trying this razor I came to realize, like many gender-targeted products razors just aren’t created equally. Turns out men’s razors are exponentially better than their female counterparts and this beauty proved it. The handle was weighty and gave a solid, smooth shave. I didn’t even know the weight of the razor mattered before this. The handle was a shaving game-changer. The blades were on-point and left my legs feeling silky. It was amazing.
Needless to say four razors last a gal a decent amount of time in the freezing cold winter, so it took me more than 30 days before needing a refill. At which point I discovered you could schedule your next delivery to come later — I scheduled mine for a little more than 2 months later. In the mean time, I decided to head to the store and see if the store prices could beat the DSC for the level of quality razor.
Guess what? They don’t even come close.
The 4-blade Gillette Fusion ProGlide Power is easily one of the best comparison products and four refill blades of it costs a whopping $17+ — $17.99 (Target); $17.07 (Amazon); $17.76 (Wal-Mart)!!
Yeah, that $9 kit isn’t looking so bad now, is it? Best of all the DSC offers a money back guarantee. If you’re not happy with anything for any reason, they’ll refund your money. All of it.
All of that said I give the Dollar Shave Club a 5/5 peony rating — it’s absolutely awesome and absolutely worth a try.
